Summary
The program does not open or crashes after double clicking on the .SAI file, using the desktop program icon, or after entering username and password.
Resolution
Before you start:
- Always create a backup of your data before proceeding with advanced solutions
- If you have a new computer, see I bought a brand new computer and Sage 50 does not run on it
- Windows updates are not available for Windows 7, Windows 8.0, or Windows 8.1
- You will need to update to Windows 11 or the latest version of Windows 10
- If prompted for the session date, see Sage 50 closes after session date without any error
- If the Windows Event Viewer shows " ... Faulting module msvcr100.dll .... ", proceed to Method 6
Method 1: Check the INI file.
- See Error: "Sage 50 Accounting has encountered a problem and needs to close", but is still operational.
- Verify you can now open Sage 50.
Method 2: Special characters in company name.
- Uninstall Sage 50.
- If activation information is found automatically, click the options to enter it manually instead.
- When prompted, click Exit and do not activate the software.
- If Sage 50 opens without error, the company named being used during activation is causing the issue. When activating use a simplified company name that contains no special characters. - How to rename the company file
Method 3: Uninstall malware with the help of an IT professional.

Method 4: Clear the TEMP files.
- See How to delete temp files.
- Verify you can now open Sage 50.
Method 5: Is the buffer size too big?
- The Connection Manager shouldn't be larger than 256. See DocLink: Error: "Database engine timed out while serving the connection".
- Verify you can now open Sage 50.
Method 6: If Event Viewer logs show application failure messages indicating msvcr100.dll as the fault.
- Verify Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (x86) and Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable (x86) are installed .
- If not, you will need to download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86) and Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4.
- Restart the computer and try to open Sage 50.
- If the issue persists:
- Uninstall Sage 50 Accounting.
- Open Windows Control Panel.
- Open the list of installed programs.
- Uninstall every instance of Microsoft Visual C++ 20XX Redistributable Package.
- Reboot the computer.
- Install all x86 Microsoft Visual C++ 20xx Redistributable again.
- Install Sage 50 Accounting.
- Perform a Windows repair or re-install Windows. Consult a computer technician for assistance with repairing Windows.
Method 7: Create a new user profile
- If you can convert the sample company, but it doesn't open.
- If you can enter a user name and password, but the company file doesn't open.
- If the Event viewer is showing Sage 50 as the faulting application because of faulting module name kernalbase.dll on Windows 10.
Method 8: Reset Windows
- If creating a new Windows profile does not solve the issue, backup all your personal data and do a Windows reset with the help of your IT professional.
Method 9: Move the data to a new computer.
