Summary
How do I move my data from one stand-alone computer to another?
Cause
Replacing system, new system, reinstall Windows, moving data new machine
Resolution
Note: If you are replacing your server, refer to I am replacing my server. What do I need to do?.
Section 1: New computer
- Make a backup of each company. Refer to How to make a backup.
Note: If the number of companies available makes backing up each individually time prohibitive, see How do I manually transfer company data from a recovered or backed up data location?.
- Install Sage 50 on the new computer. Refer to Installation instructions - Sage 50—U.S. Edition.
- Move the backups into a shared folder or onto removable media (USB drive, CD, flash drive) so they can be accessed at the new computer
- On the new computer, open Sage 50.
- Restore each backup and choose the option to Create a new company using the restored data. Refer to How to restore a backup.
Note: If you have any custom forms, select the option to restore custom forms along with data.
Section 2: Moving from server to workstation
- Close all instances of the software running.
- On the workstation you wish to make the new host, create a new local data path. Follow Using the Sage 50 Database Repair Utility.
- To move companies to the new data path follow How do I move my company data folder?.
Section 3: Upgrading Windows
- Before installing the new version of Windows, open Sage 50.
- Make a backup of each company Refer to How to make a backup.
- Move the backup files onto removable media (USB drive, external hard drive, CD/DVD).
- After installing the Windows upgrade, reinstall Sage 50. Refer to Installation instructions - Sage 50—U.S. Edition.
- Open Sage 50.
- Restore each backup, choosing the option to Create a new company using the restored data. Refer to How to restore a backup.
