Note: To ensure proper operation, the groups System and Administrators should have full control of Security permissions on the shared folder. Additionally, the specific Windows usernames for each Sage 50 user (or desired user groups) as well as the System user should have full control in the Sharing permissions on the shared folder. If you are not on a network, but on a standalone machine, go to Option 2.

Option 1: Network security and share permissions

  1. Locate the shared folder, which is in your data path. Refer to How to find data path and program path.
Note: The shared folder is typically the folder above the lowest folder in your data path. For instance, if your data path is C:\Sage\Peachtree\Company, the shared folder is typically Peachtree.
  2. Right-click the shared folder and select Properties
    • If you are getting a "SHARING_VIOLATION" error, you will need to check the Properties for each folder in the file path noted in the error message to find which one is Shared
  3. Select the Sharing tab.
  4. Click Advanced Sharing.
  5. Select the Share this folder box.
  6. Click Permissions.
  7. Select Add.
  8. Type in the individual Windows usernames or groups that will need access to Sage 50. Additionally, add the SYSTEM group. If you use Microsoft 365 features in Sage 50, you should also add the NETWORK SERVICE group.
  9. Click Check Names to validate the usernames above and click OK.
  10. Give each added group or user Full control.
  11. Click OK and then OK again when returned to the Advanced Sharing window.
  12. Select the Security tab.
  13. Verify Administrators and System have Full control.
  14. Click OK.

Note: The Everyone group appears by default when sharing folders in Windows with "Read" access - it is not recommended to modify this access level as it can pose a security risk. The best practice is to periodically review and audit the users who have access to the Sage 50 data and remove access rights for users who you no longer want to have access to Sage 50 data.

Option 2: Setting security permissions on standalone computer

  1. Browse to your data path.
  2. Right-click the folder in which your company folders reside and select Properties. This folder is usually named Company.
  3. Select the Security tab.
  4. Verify Administrators and System have Full control.
  5. Click OK.
